Dr. Michael Newell as Assistant Dean of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies
University College Dean Jianwei Niu has appointed Dr. Michael Newell as the new Assistant Dean of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies for University College at The University of Texas at San Antonio, effective Sep 1. Dr. Newell steps into this key leadership role with a focus on advancing academic innovation and enhancing the student experience across undergraduate and graduate programs in University College.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Michael Newell into this important leadership role,” said Dean Niu. “His expertise and commitment to academic excellence will be vital as we continue to strengthen curriculum design, enhance student learning opportunities, and advance the academic mission of University College. Dr. Newell’s leadership will help ensure that our programs not only meet the needs of today’s students but also prepare them to thrive in a rapidly changing world.”
As Assistant Dean, Dr. Newell will collaborate closely with Associate Dean Rebecca Schroeder to strengthen academic programming, build cross-campus partnerships, and champion initiatives that promote student success from enrollment through graduation.
“I’m excited to step into this new role because it allows me to further support University College’s mission of fostering academic excellence and student achievement,” Dr. Newell said. “Our university has provided me with incredible colleagues and students, and I look forward to helping expand opportunities that prepare students for success both in and beyond the classroom. Dr. Newell brings significant experience to the position, having served as Social Science Pathway Coordinator and Graduate Advisor of Record for University College. He has also been recognized for his dedication to service, earning the University College Achievement Award in 2023 for exemplary service and commitment to the college.
Joining UT-San Antonio in 2019, Dr. Newell has taught courses in international security, security politics, and globalization through the Academic Inquiry and Scholarship (AIS) and Multi-disciplinary Studies (MDST) programs. His scholarly work has appeared in prominent journals such as Security Dialogue, European Journal of International Relations, and Studies in Conflict and Terrorism.
He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Political Science from Syracuse University, an M.A. in International Relations from the University of Chicago, and a B.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy, Economics from The Ohio State University.
Beyond his academic achievements, Dr. Newell is deeply committed to the student experience. In his new role, he aims to leverage data-driven practices and collaborative partnerships to improve retention, persistence, and graduation rates.
