Manager of Strategic Initiatives, University College
Assistant Professor of Practice, Academic Introduction & Strategies
Lt. Col. (Ret.) Timothy S. Ball serves as Manager of Strategic Initiatives for University College. In this role, he serves as project lead for UT San Antonio's first Intergovernmental Support Agreement (IGSA) with the U.S. Army Installation Management Command (IMCOM) — a landmark 10-year partnership positioning the university as a key collaborator in supporting the Army’s global installation operations.
Ball brings more than 20 years of distinguished service in the U.S. Army, including extensive experience in special operations, leadership development and international security cooperation. A retired Special Forces officer, he served as a detachment and company commander in the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), with multiple deployments to Iraq and assignments across Europe, including the NATO Special Operations Headquarters. His military career focused on irregular warfare, partnership-building and advising allied and partner forces around the world.
From May 2021 until his retirement from active duty in August 2024, Ball served as Professor of Military Science and chair of the Army ROTC program at UT San Antonio, where he was responsible for developing and mentoring the next generation of Army officers. Under his leadership, the Roadrunner Battalion strengthened its reputation for excellence in officer commissioning and leadership training across South Texas.
In addition to his leadership roles, Ball is a recognized thought leader in national security and special operations, serving as a Non-Resident Fellow with the Foreign Policy Research Institute. His research and writing focus on the strategic employment of special operations forces, military advising and great power competition.
Ball was born and raised in Houston, Texas, and remains an avid fan of Houston sports teams. In his spare time, he enjoys exploring the great outdoors with his wife and kids, or heading out for a long run on the Salado Creek Greenway.
